Transforming Education Through Empowered Teachers

In a world where education shapes the future, teachers remain the architects of change. This belief inspired the Teachers Training and Development Program organized by MentorMe Nigeria, with generous support from the Bet9ja Foundation. Held over three days from October 9 to 11 2025, the program brought together more than 80 teachers for the online sessions and 35 teachers for the final physical workshop. The training was designed to equip educators with practical skills, modern teaching strategies, and renewed motivation to enhance classroom engagement and improve student performance.

The sessions featured experienced facilitators who shared valuable insights on understanding learner differences, applying instructional design principles, and redefining the teacher’s professional identity. Each day built upon the previous one, offering participants not just information but transformation. The program began with an engaging session by Ms. Toluwani Asimi, who guided teachers through the process of understanding the different types of learners in their classrooms. She emphasized that no two students are the same and that recognizing each learner’s unique style is crucial for effective teaching. Through practical demonstrations, she showed how the use of rhymes, visuals, and other creative techniques can make lessons more interactive and enjoyable. Beyond teaching techniques, she reminded participants of the importance of empathy; knowing students personally, identifying their strengths and challenges, and helping them learn in ways that suit them best.

Building on that foundation, Mr. Wale Adejuyigbe introduced participants to a redefined understanding of intelligence and the concept of instructional design. He explained that knowledge alone is not the measure of intelligence; rather, true intelligence lies in the ability to create. Teachers, he said, are not merely conveyors of information but designers of learning experiences. He introduced Bloom’s Taxonomy as a key framework for developing clear learning objectives and designing purposeful assessments. Mr. Adejuyigbe encouraged educators to move away from generic test questions and instead develop assessments that inspire critical thinking, creativity, and problem-solving—skills essential for thriving in the 21st century. His session helped teachers see themselves as innovators capable of shaping dynamic and impactful classroom environments.

The final session, facilitated by Mr. Olatunde Rasheed, was both thought-provoking and empowering. He challenged long-standing stereotypes that portray teachers as undervalued or underpaid, urging participants to reject these limiting beliefs and embrace their true professional worth. “Teachers are builders of the nation’s future,” he reminded them. He encouraged every teacher to own a copy of the National Policy on Education, describing it as the “Bible of education,” and to study it to better understand the philosophy that guides Nigeria’s education system. Mr. Rasheed also spoke about “teacher psychology,” explaining that learning is state-dependent; a learner’s emotions, mindset, and environment all play critical roles in how effectively they learn. He emphasized the importance of continuous self-development through reading, research, and professional training, encouraging teachers to think beyond the conventional and continually reinvent themselves.

By the end of the three-day program, participants expressed renewed passion, clarity, and purpose in their profession. They left with actionable strategies to make their classrooms more engaging, their lessons more meaningful, and their students more inspired. The Teachers Training and Development Program successfully created a space where teachers could learn, unlearn, and grow together—reminding everyone that empowered teachers build empowered generations.

With the continued support of partners like the Bet9ja Foundation, MentorMe Nigeria remains committed to helping teachers thrive, reimagining what quality education looks like, and building a stronger, more innovative teaching community across the country.
